The art of invitation
How to word your wedding invitation
The best invitation wording feels like the couple: warm, clear and entirely at ease.
Begin with the essentials
Every invitation needs the names of the people getting married, the date, the location and a clear indication of the celebration. If a ceremony and reception take place at different venues, name both and make the timings easy to understand.
Choose the right voice
Formal wording suits some occasions; a more personal voice suits others. “Together with their families” is a graceful opening, while “We would love you to celebrate with us” feels intimate and direct. Neither is inherently better—the atmosphere of the day should guide the language.
Let the design breathe
Avoid asking the invitation to carry every travel, accommodation and dietary detail. The invitation introduces the occasion. A coordinating wedding website can carry practical information and updates.
Check before sharing
Read the names, date, day of the week, venue spelling and time aloud. Ask another person to proofread. For destination weddings, include the country as well as the town or venue so travelling guests have an unambiguous starting point.
